Similar to other parts of an aircraft, the fuel tanks must be regularly maintained in order for them to work optimally. However, fuel tank maintenance does come along with some potential dangers. While it may not seem like a complicated task, fuel tank maintenance requires time, care, and effort. As such, you must always be aware of all the hazards associated with cleaning the aircraft fuel tanks and take the proper precautions.
The first part of inspection consists of looking for any leaks or cracks. Once you have verified that there are no leaks, you must check to see if all of the fuel tank parts are attached correctly. Loose parts can create more problems later. You should also make sure that there is no corrosion as this can cause further damage down the road. Lastly, take a look at the fuel flow to verify that the fuel pressure is adequate according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
The next major areas that require thorough inspection are those which have nuts, bolts, or other similar fasteners. Check to see if all the nuts and clamps are properly tightened. If the clamps do not seal with sufficient torque, then they must be replaced. This is especially important because any loose nuts or clamps can compromise the integrity of the entire aircraft, leading to malfunction or overall failure.
After all the aforementioned checks have been carried out, it is recommended that you look at the booster pumps. There are a few things to check when inspecting the booster pumps. The first thing you must look for is any leakage, and the second thing is for any clogging or bending in the drain lines. If there is an obstruction in the drain lines, then it must be cleared so the booster pumps can function without any issues.
Generally, a pressure warning signal will light up to indicate when there is a problem. However, in some cases, it may not light up. To ensure that the indicator is illuminating when necessary, you can press the test switch to see if it lights up. Alternatively, you may also turn the battery switch on and build up pressure in the booster pump to verify that everything is working correctly. If the light is still not turning on, then you must repair or replace it promptly.
To check how much pressure is building up in the fuel tank, you can use a fuel pressure gauge. Additionally, to maintain the correct pressure values, you can also check the fuel tank’s glass cover to ensure that the cover is not loose and tighten it if necessary. It is also imperative that you check for any potential leaks in the lines, as well as look for any obstructions in the vent and remove any debris so that the fuel flows properly and at the appropriate pressure.
