AMD, a lead technology designer who powers millions of intelligent devices, including personal computers, cloud servers and game consoles, was examined by a fan and questioned as to why their Threadripper CPU has had 4 dies under the hood. Upon taking apart the motherboard it was found that the package contained four dies; however, only two of those dies were active, and there were not 16 total dies across the board which seems highly incorrect. This fan reached out to AMD to see if they would comment on the reason as to why the motherboard looked as though it was constructed incorrectly. AMD provided a straight forward explanation as to why this was. The Threadripper has four dies but only two in use because without including all four dies the motherboard would create mechanical instability. AMD said all four dies are absolutely required for the motherboard to be self-stabilizing.
