The Boeing and Airbus family of Virgin Atlantic will have a complete new and exciting upgrade by middle of 2019 : in-flight wi-fi connectivity. The trials of Gogo’s 2Ku connectivity systems on one of 737-800s as turned out as a completely success, therefore more equipment will be shipped in October this year.
Virgin Australia’s plan is to have all of its’s 777-300 ER and a portion of 737s improved with the new set up by the end of this year. On the other hand, A330-200s are in plan of being ready by the second half of 2019. At the end of the same year, Virgin Atlantic is expected to receive 40 737 Max aircraft.
John Borghetti, Virgin Australia CEO, says “Virgin Australia will offer a base level of free wi-fi to all of our guests on domestic flights and become the only Australian airline to offer wi-fi on international flights.” Therefore, the rollout will see almost all the aircrafts upgraded with wi-fi.
Previously, it had been announced that Virgin Australia will be relying on satellites operated by Intelsal and SES but at the moment, the company is using Ku-band satellite operated by Optus. Singtel Optus has been owned by SingTel since 2001 and it is the second largest telecommunications company in Australia.
